'Dark Knight Rises' Exclusive Footage Premieres At Movie Awards

Christopher Nolan himself took the stage to premiere footage from his final Batman film, premiering in July.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Tom Hardy as Bane in "Dark Knight Rises"

You waited patiently for your glimpse at never-before-seen footage from the final film of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, "The Dark Knight Rises," and it did not disappoint.

The movie's stars Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christian Bale took the stage at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards to briefly look back at everything that has come before this final chapter and then took one last look ahead before the movie hits theaters on July 20.

The first montage featured some of the most iconic images from both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," including several scenes featuring Heath Ledger as the Joker, a sight which triggered an emotional shout-out from Bale.

Then it was time for the master himself, Christopher Nolan, to take the stage and present a ton of never-before-seen clips from his final trip to Gotham City. The director emphasized that his work over the past nine years was to tell a great story, and for that to be true, he needed to have a great ending. That is what Nolan is trying to do with "The Dark Knight Rises," which seems more and more like the definitive end to this Batman tale.

The footage opened with a scene featuring Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway as John Blake and Selena Kyle, respectively. Blake is a Gotham beat cop, and Kyle is the notorious burglar known as Catwoman, who insists, "A girl's got to eat."

The rest of the montage showed off a lot of new material featuring Batman, his nemesis Bane and the all-out war that's about to take place on the streets of Gotham.

One of the most pleasant surprises from the footage comes when a scared henchman is face-to-face with Selena Kyle in her Catwoman outfit. "He's behind you," she says, at which point, the crony turns around to find Batman upside down.

With all of its new reveals of Batman and the final struggle ahead of him, the package amounted to one amazing look at a movie we simply cannot wait to see.

Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. See what just happened at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards!

Justin Bieber Investigated In Criminal Battery Against Paparazzo

Photographer claims that Bieber got into a physical altercation with him on Sunday.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>Every young star has to go through certain rites of passage: your first starring role, landing a platinum debut album, first fake tabloid headline. On Saturday, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> earned his stripes by allegedly getting into an altercation with a paparazzi photographer.</P><P>According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/05/27/justin-bieber-suspect-battery-paparazzi-calabasas/" target="_blank">TMZ</a>, Bieber is a suspect in a criminal battery investigation after he got into it with a photographer on Sunday at a mall in Calabasas, California, where the singer lives. The site reported that the unnamed photographer was attempting to snap a shot of Bieber when a physical altercation took place between them.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Strives For Perfection" id="vid:765701" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>The photographer called 911 after the incident, but when the police arrived Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had already left the scene. The camera man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain in his upper torso and released a short time later.</P><P>He filed a police report naming Bieber,18, as the culprit and police are now investigating the incident as a misdemeanor battery case and are looking to speak to Bieber, Gomez and other witnesses. Police were told by witnesses that the photographer had been blocking Bieber's car as the "Boyfriend" singer was trying to leave the mall. After Bieber exited his car and asked the man to move, a scuffle broke out when he would not.</P><P>A spokesperson for Bieber had no comment.</P><P>TMZ also reported that several witnesses claimed that after the fight a lawyer approached the shooter and said he could get "a lot of money" out of the incident and advised the paparazzo to call for an ambulance and file a police report.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

No hay más Led Zeppelin

By

Francis Lawrence's 'Catching Fire' To-Do List

As a new helmer takes over 'The Hunger Games,' Hobnobbing examines the challenges (and opportunities) that lie ahead.
By Amy Wilkinson

The reaping has concluded, with Francis Lawrence officially named victor in the contest to direct "Catching Fire," according to a release from Lionsgate.

It's been a fraught few weeks for fans following director Gary Ross' announcement that he would not helm the series' second installment. Numerous directors were reportedly in contention for the coveted position, including Alfonso Cuarón, David Cronenberg, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Bennett Miller. Lionsgate and producer Nina Jacobson ultimately singled out Lawrence, who most recently shepherded "Water for Elephants" from the page to the screen.

"From the very beginning of this brilliant trilogy's journey from page to screen, our first priority has been to stay true to the heart and soul of Suzanne Collins' powerful stories. From my first conversation with Francis, I knew he would make a great partner for both me and Suzanne," producer Nina Jacobson said in a statement. "His passion for 'Catching Fire' and inspired ideas for a faithful adaptation make him the perfect director for this movie. I know this will be a wonderful collaboration and I cannot wait to get started."

With a November 23, 2013, release date looming, Lawrence has a lot to accomplish within the next 18 months. From currying favor among Panem's faithful to casting a cabal of characters, let's examine the opportunities and challenges that await the director:

Fan Following
Say what you will about Ross' vision for and execution of the first installment of Suzanne Collins' series, but the director won over fickle fans before a single frame ever rolled by, positioning himself as an acolyte first and director second. Lawrence is already off to a winning start, posting a special message for fans on Facebook:

Hello fellow Hunger Games fans! I just want you all to know how unbelievably excited and honored I am to be a part of Catching Fire. At the end of the day, all of the work that I put in to my movies is for you -- the fans. Make sure to post and let me know what you're most excited to see in this adaptation as we aim to make something truly faithful and spectacular!

Lawrence can continue building consensus by giving fans further insight into his vision. How about sharing a sneak peek of concept art? Or, as filming progresses, taking a page out of "Breaking Dawn" director Bill Condon's playbook and sharing on-set images early? Involving fans during the film's infancy will keep fans eager and engaged.

Study Sequels
There are few more feared curses than the sophomore slump. Propelling an established narrative forward in an engaging and meaningful manner can sometimes be tricky, but it's an art that directors like Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") have mastered. Better yet, Lawrence would be wise to look at franchises helmed by multiple directors (hello, "Harry Potter") to strategize a smooth transition.

Find Finnick (and Johanna and ... )
Lawrence's first high-profile decision as director will likely be casting the new players introduced during the Quarter Quell. Tributes Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason are of special interest to fans, with casting speculation running rampant. (Unsurprisingly, we have a few suggestions for the hunk and the hottie too.) The caliber of actors Lawrence lines up will say plenty about the sort of sequel he plans to direct. In other words: Make it good, Francis!

Stronger CGI
If there was a chief complaint among fans regarding Ross' work on "The Hunger Games," it was that the Girl on Fire effects were largely lackluster. Lawrence has the opportunity to improve here, and with a brand-new, intricately designed arena, the helmer can create his own vision of the Games that's not reliant upon the precedent set by Ross.

Phone Famous Friends
T. Bone Burnett is one of the best scorers in the biz, and his sensibility helped set the dire tone of the dystopian drama, so we hope he'll sign back up for the sequel. But, as is often the case, director shakeups can lead to staffing shakeups, so if Burnett is no longer game, Lawrence should take advantage of his musically inclined mates from his days as a video director. Aren't you at least a tiny bit curious what a Lady Gaga-produced "Catching Fire" score would sound like?

What do you think should be on Francis Lawrence's to-do list? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Bobby Brown Speaks Out About Whitney Houston's Death On "The Today Show," Said He Didn't Do Narcotics Before Meeting Whitney

For the first time since Whitney Houston's death, we're hearing her ex-husband Bobby Brown speak out in his own words.  His response to being blamed for figuratively killing Whitney and how his current fiancee feels about their past love, inside...

In part 1 of this morning's Matt Lauer interview with Bobby Brown (above), the singer spoke out in response to those who blame him for introducing his ex-wife Whitney Houston to drugs.

Bobby maintained that he didn't even do drugs before meeting Whitney (aside from weed and alcohol) and when he was introduced to it in their relationship, his addictive personality allowed for things to get out of control.

Matt asked Bobby what he could have done differently when he saw Whitney spiraling out of control, and Bobby responded:

"I coulda done something different, you know to -- ensure that she had a longer life. But ... you have to want it, you know?"

He said they were so in love and so deep into their addiction that the first season fo "Being Bobby Brown" was a wake up call.  Their drug use was affecting their relationship and their daughter.  And they saw just how they looked int he public eye.  Whitney refused to do another season, and the couple also filed for divorce the following year in 2006.

Bobby says he had so much love for her and never would want to hurt her:

"My fiancee knows how I felt about that woman," Brown said. "My kids know how I feel ... how I felt about Whitney. It's not a secret, you know? I was in love with her deeply."

Bobby revealed he found out that Whitney died from his New Edition groupmate Ralph Tresvant while they were on stage.

Part 2 will air tomorrow morning.

Usher To Preview Looking For Myself At Off-Broadway Show

Singer tells MTV News 'Fuerza Bruta' matches the 'more artistic' music on his upcoming album.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>This Saturday (and this Saturday only), Usher will appear in New York City's "Fuerza Bruta," an off-Broadway show where no one speaks, but the story is told through bright lights, music and dancing. In the lead role of Running Man, <a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> will also use the show to preview his June album release, <a href="/news/articles/1682140/usher-looking-for-myself.jhtml"><i>Looking for Myself.</i></a> </P><P> </P><P>Fans in the audience will likely get closer than they've ever been to the singer, as the audience stands during the performance, becoming another member of the company. "When we began to explore different directions [for the performance like] maybe we use some of their music, maybe we use some of mine ... and before you knew it the idea came together. We tried it, I got on Running Man and it worked." </P><P> </P><P>The show will stream his entire album, which drops June 12, and he thinks the mind-bending artistry of "Fuerza Bruta" works with the sound he's created on it. "This is more artistic of an album than I've had in history," he said. "And I felt like yeah, it would be a lot for me, but I was willing to at least try it.
